The survival of ‘British Steel’ at Scunthorpe – Chinese-owned, thanks to Boris Johnson – is on a knife-edge. For the future of the town and national security, everything possible should be done to keep its blast furnaces going.

My heart is with its workers because I was born and bred in Scunthorpe and at least three generations of my family worked shifts at the steel-works. ‘Up the iron’ was the cry of supporters of its football team, Scunthorpe United, in those days playing at the Old Show Ground and enjoying the services of ace penalty-taker, Jack Brownsword; I never missed a home game.
